- A lei do Senhor é perfeita, reconforta a alma; a ordem do Senhor é segura, instrui o simples.
- Ainda que vosso servo neles atente, guardando-os com todo o cuidado;
- [To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.] The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
- Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
- {There is} no speech nor language, {where} their voice is not heard. {where…: or, without these their voice is heard: Heb. without their voice heard}
- Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, {line: or, rule, or, direction}
- Which {is} as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, {and} rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.
- His going forth {is} from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.
- The law of the LORD {is} perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD {is} sure, making wise the simple. {law: or, doctrine} {converting: or, restoring}
- The statutes of the LORD {are} right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD {is} pure, enlightening the eyes.
- The fear of the LORD {is} clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD {are} true {and} righteous altogether. {true: Heb. truth}
- More to be desired {are they} than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. {the honeycomb: Heb. the dropping of honeycombs}
- Moreover by them is thy servant warned: {and} in keeping of them {there is} great reward.
- Who can understand {his} errors? cleanse thou me from secret {faults}.
- Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous {sins}; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. {the great: or, much}
- Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer. {strength: Heb. rock}
The writer C.S. Lewis said concerning Psalm 19, “I take this to be the greatest poem in the Psalter and one of the greatest lyrics in the world.”10 Creation, God’s word, and the life of prayer speak in harmony to convey the profound message of God’s glory to those who have ears to hear.
Psalm 19 brings together cosmos, torah, and prayer. It puts in an interrelated sequence the language of the heavens, the instruction of the Lord, and the words of the psalmist.
In Psalm 19, the Holy God is revealed to us in Creation and in the Word. It is important for us to remember that worship always begins with God. Worship is God’s idea. We don’t call ourselves into worship. We are called into worship. Our worship begins with the REVELATION of the Triune Godhead. Only then can worship be a RESPONSE where we come before God in adoration, thanksgiving, or in the case of the psalmist here, confession of sin. As we respond to God in worship we are transformed. We always leave changed. We always leave changed. In worship, there is RENEWAL through the redeeming work that can only come to us as gift. And Jesus Christ is the one holding it all together.
